After I ran the Virginia Beach Rock n Roll Half Marathon in 2006 as my first-ever big race, my husband offered to take me to San Jose for their Inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon.
At first I was doubtful. Racing is hard work. But still, I thought, a trip to California and all I have to do is run 13.1 miles? Wow, that's a no brainer.
And then I read about Elite Racing's Heavy Medal Series plus the Rock Star challenge and I was hooked. With such a supportive husband, 2007 would be my year to earn all the extra medals AND be a Rock Star. I signed up for every event. Where there was a choice between a marathon or a half marathon, I always picked the marathon.
I am not a fast runner, but I am a determined runner. Throughout the year, I picked each race off one by one. My times never varied by much. I was a steady 6:30 finisher, give or take minutes for the marathon and around 3:00 for the half marathon. I wished for faster times but I also wanted to stay injury free and become a Rock Star.
Finally it was San Jose time again and I proudly donned my gold Rock Star bib and took on the course. Burn it up, I did not, but finish it I did. I was a 2007 Rock Star. And I finished each race in less than the official course cut off time.
I'm in the record books. I'm not the first person from North Carolina to be an Elite Running Rock Star like I had hoped, but I am possibly the oldest.
That's me 65 years old and running strong! Thanks Elite Racing for a great program.
